Year of the Bird Exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery

It’s the ‘Year of the Bird’ at Maitland Regional Art Gallery with their upcoming exhibition starting on Saturday 23 February. Curated by local artist and designer Caelli Jo Brooker, and Helen Hopcroft, an artist and writer who has recently moved to the area. Exploring the increasing popularity of bird imagery in contemporary art, Year of the Bird includes works by Marian Drew, one of Australia’s most highly regarded photographers, as well as Trevor Weekes, Emma van Leest, Pamela See, Kate Foster (UK), Vanessa Barbay, Helen Wright and David Hampton.

This is the second creative project that Caelli and Helen have worked on together, curating ‘Happily Ever After’ last year. Showcasing artists’ books with a fairy tale theme, the exhibition toured four venues in NSW and Queensland, with Artspace Mackay buying a number of books for their permanent collection. This talented duo are hoping to bring the same level of success to Maitland Regional Art Gallery, who were supportive of their bird imagery idea. With the exhibition catalogue featuring an essay by Dr Yvette Watt and Dr Nigel Rothfels, experts in the field of animal representations, assures that only quality piece from the best of local and international artists will be showcased at the Year of the Bird exhibition.

Dr Rod Bennison, CEO of Minding Animals International, will officially open the exhibition on Saturday 23 February at 3.30pm. The whole family is welcome to come, with Kahibah Funky Brass Band playing from 3pm onwards. If you want to see these creatures in all their glory, head on down to this free exhibition before closing on Sunday 7 April at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, 230 High Street, Maitland.
