There is something comforting to the human soul about familiarity. The knowledge that no matter what may happen, some things never change. This familiarity can most certainly be found at the Blackbutt Hotel every Wednesday night when the Quizmaster’s Trivia bandwagon makes its way to the popular New Lambton establishment.

It is Wednesday night 5 February, but in reality it could be any Wednesday night of the year. In the words of Billy Joel “the regular crowd shuffles in”, to the Blackbutt, assembling to pit their trivial knowledge against the familiar faces who make the weekly pilgrimage to what locals call “The Blacky”.

Having been an participant myself for going on three years, the teams and their members are all too familiar. For six days and 22 hours each week we are complete strangers, but between 8pm - 10pm every Wednesday night we come together as friends. “Hard hitting” questions allow thoughts of work, politics, family dramas and world events to be left at the door as quizmaster Mark asks, “what year was Britney Spears born?” & “on average how many packets of cigarettes are sold every minute throughout Australia?”

The clock strikes 10pm, prizes have been awarded and trivia at the Blackbutt Hotel is over for another week. Teams start to leave, bemoaning that question from round one that cost them that vital point & perhaps, victory. Everyone smiles & waves, knowing they will see each other again, same time, same place next week.

There’s that old saying that the only certainties in life are death and taxes but maybe Wednesday night trivia at the ‘Blacky’  could be added to that list.

The Blackbutt Hotel holds trivia every Wednesday night starting at 8pm. Entry costs $3 per person.

You have to check out the guy who does Wednesday night trivia at Waratah’s Rugby Club. He is off the hook. As far as trivia nights go he is the creme!. The crowd fluctuates but this guy changes a night into an event.
