A trifecta is a beautiful thing and this weekend in Newcastle, it’s a blues trifecta people! That’s right, from your Friday through to Sunday evening you can get 3 glorious doses of the blues. Here are the details:

Friday - The Money Smokers at The Cambridge

In their own words, The Money Smokers are a “a cosmically privileged, soulfully smoothened, and devilishly dastardly band of young men and they have been brought to you to wash away your growing fear that they just don’t make em like they used to”. They’re coming up from Sydney to deliver a set of tunes that are a little bit country, a little bit funky, a little bit rock n roll and a whole lot bluesy. They’ll be joined by Twin Thunder Boy and The Delta Lions. Kick off is 9pm. Check out their tunes and get more info.

Saturday - Brothers Grim at The Great Northern

Described as “Howlin’ Wolf in an AC/DC t-shirt on too much cocaine”, The Brothers Grim serve up particularly unwholesome 1920s-inspired blues. They take the beloved I, IV, V chords of the 12 bar blues and inject their own brand of finger picking chaos, influences from rockabilly, swamp and rock that is said to make you feel something like you’ve been pushed over into the dirt and tongue-kissed at the same time. They’ll be joined by 9-piece foot stomping, psychedelic freakout band The Toot Toot Toots. Kick off is 9pm, $15 entry on the door. More info.

Sunday - The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats at The Wickham Park Hotel

In an age of dancing robots and the electric toothbrush, the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats are taking it back to a simpler time, where the pickin’ was fast and the banjo was king. The Dead Rats have come up from Melbourne to share their “rockgrass” (rock does bluegrass, or bluegrass does rock…) toe tappin’ tunes with Novocastrians this Sunday at The Wicko. Kick of is 1pm. Hang around afterwards and you can catch a set from local blues favourite Steve Edmonds. More info.

Blues fans (or even if you’re not), support these bands visiting Newcastle and get amongst it.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
