The Laughing Stock Comedy Gala

The Laughing Stock Comedy Gala brings together some of the best comedic acts in the world! On March 10, The Axis of Awesome, The Blanks, Claire Hooper and Rhys Nicholson will band together at the Civic Theatre to bring you a night of ‘music, mirth and merriment’.

The Axis of Awesome

The Axis of Awesome are The World’s Most Awesomest Comedy Band. With their unique comedy songs and pop parodies, they have entertained audiences worldwide, and their Four Chord Song has received over 20 million hits on YouTube. They’ve recently received the Time Out Award for Best Australian Act at the Sydney Comedy Festival and have released two albums, ‘scissors, paper, ROCK!’ and ‘Infinity Rock Explosion’, as well as their ‘The Axis of Awesome Live’ DVD.

The Blanks

The Blanks are an American a capella quartet, most notably known as ‘Ted’s Band’ or ‘The Worthless Peons’ in popular TV Show Scrubs. Making up the quartet are Sam Lloyd, known as Ted Buckland in Scrubs, Paul F. Perry, George Miserlis and Philip McNiven. With a mixture of a capella versions of TV show themes and musical and sketch comedy, their show also includes basic choreography, talking toys as lead singers and costume changes!

Claire Hooper

Claire Hooper is a popular Australian comedian, particularly known for being Team Captain on Channel TEN’s Good News Week, as well as her appearances on Rove Live, The Comedy Channel’s Stand Up, ABC TV’s The Sideshow, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Great Debate.

Rhys Nicholson

Former Novocastrian, Rhys Nicholson will be the special guest MC for the Laughing Stock Comedy Gala. After performing his stand-up comedy around Sydney for a year, he’s back to provide the crowd with entertainment all night!

Brian Jonestown Massacre

Psychedelic rockers The Brian Jonestown Massacre are almost set to kick off their Australian Tour and will be playing on Friday 25 May 2012 at Newcastle Leagues Club, Level 1. Their tour is in celebration of their latest album, Aufheben, which will be released in Australia on the 30 April. Aufheben was recorded in Berlin at lead singer Anton Newcombe’s studio, with the name Aufheben a philosophical term used to describe what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact. Joining the Brian Jonestown Massacre on tour are Danish indie rock duo The Raveonettes!

Boy & Bear

Boy & Bear proudly present their Remember the Mexican Australian Tour! The Sydney quintet will be embarking on their massive 25 date tour at the beginning of May 2012, making their way to Bar on The Hill at the University of Newcastle on Thursday 31st May. Boy & Bear’s tour will see them travel to regional areas, playing smaller, more intimate shows for those who have supported the band since the beginning. Boy & Bear have recently seen great success, since winning the Triple J Unearthered JAward, going on their international tour, receiving five Aria awards for their debut album Moonfire, and making the top 5 of Triple J’s Hottest 100 2011 with their single Feeding Line.

More 90s Acts Announce Tours

First the Vengaboys, then Aqua.. It seems as though a 90’s revival in Australia is officially underway.

Ain’t no party like an S Club party right? See for yourself on 2 June 2012 at Newcastle Panthers, as they tour with London R&B collective Big Brovaz, most notably known for their single Nu Flow. With S Club hits such as Bring it All Back and S Club Party you’ll be sure to be transported back to the 90s. Tickets go on sale on Monday 5 March 2012, and can be purchased through moshtix or bigtix.

Eiffel 65 and N-Trance team up to bring Newcastle yet another dose of 90’s nostalgia at the Fat As Butter Festival, on Saturday the 22 September 2012. Eiffel 65’s Blue (Da Ba Dee) went 3x Platinum in 1999 in Australia, and is sure to take you back in time, as is N-Trance’s 1995 breakthrough track Set you Free!

Anja is a 3rd year student at the University of Newcastle, studying a Bachelor of Communication (majoring in Public Relations and Media Studies). She has interned at InStyle Magazine, worked on the committee for Newcastle Fashion Week and is an intern at Sticky. She also spent 5 months studying in Manchester and backpacking around Europe.
