Newcastle Student Art Exhibitions Opening This Week

Newcastle student art exhibitions

Lyndon Savio & a bunch of his cohort of Newcastle art students will exhibit their works at the Watt Space Gallery throughout October, opening this week. Get along to the gallery & support this local talent… and get in on the cheese & wine too!

3 Moments, 10 Bullets by Lyndon Savio

The artworks involved in this exhibition are concentrated fragments of nostalgia. The works are created and informed by experience and relation. Not seeking to state an explicit form or discovery, but to be reinterpreted with each interaction.

Meaning: Love of my heart old mother

“But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet, tread softly because you tread on my dreams.” - William Butler Yeats

Paperhouse by Deborah Hally

A photography exhibition exploring femininity & identity, Hally creates a feeling of lush femininity that hints at something more uncomfortable.

Functionalism by Riona Tindal

The mosaics, buttons, paint and fabrics used in this exhibition challenge traditional notions of art and craft, right and wrong and attempt to blur society’s labeling and categorising things, people & ideas into neat, comfortable boxes.

Presence/Absence by Sarah Stubbs & Melanie Webb

Can you believe everything you see? This exhibition explores the idea of presence and absence through the use of light and slow shutter speeds to create ghostly impressions that ask the audience to question reality. The photography replicate tricks of the eye & challenge the perception of photography capturing reality.

Inside/Inside-Out by Anthony Yates

These photographs by Anthony Yates explore a cityscape devoid of human interaction, hinting at something sinister lurking beneath the thin veneer & ultimately portraying the artist’s inner machinations.

Opening night for these exhibitions is Thursday, 6 October at 6:30pm and they run until Sunday, 22 October.

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
