So soon after Newcastle being added to Lonely Planet’s top 10 destinations, we are again in the limelight with people touting our fair city as Australia’s new arts capital!

It is pleasing to see in print what so many Novocastrians already know – that as well as having a culture steeped in industry, and beyond Silverchair and Tap Dogs, Newcastle is a creative hub brimming with talent in areas of visual art, fashion, music and theatre… There are some great players amongst the creative community encouraging and allowing this talent to bloom and grow and be recognised across the country, including Urban Insider favourites Renew Newcastle.

We’ve been keeping you up to date with the goings on at many of our local galleries, and hope that many of you have had the chance to get along and check out local and touring exhibitions. If you’ve been meaning to get amongst it, never fear, there’s a great opportunity ahead on Thursday at the Emma Soup Gallery.

The “All My Colours” exhibition launch will kick of at 6pm, complete with complimentary eats and drinks, and will feature the work of three artists:

UK artist Ben Phe will be showing his artworks before heading back home. You can check out the result of his obsession with colour and patterns. Standout: glass paintings!

Scott Newman presents what sounds like the impossible: a 10 000 day retrospective chronicling his thoughts and his reality. If that’s not intriguing, I don’t know what is! Prints also available on the night for just $10.

Finally, you’ll be able to get inside Ashlee Jedrzejak’s head and experience her psychedelc/Alice in Wonderland/Mr Squiggle inspired prints. She also has gift cards and journals available in the shop.

If it’s authentic and gorgeous art you seek, head down to the Soup Can Gallery at 523 Hunter Street, Newcastle, to eat, drink, be merry, support Newcastle’s creative community, and revel in what we already know - our city is home to so many talented people!

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
