The golden age of cinema returns to Newcastle this weekend with Australia’s Silent Film Festival rolling into the Greater Union Cinemas on King Street. With the films fully restored, the sessions feature the genius and artistry of many of the titans of this golden age of cinema.

Silent cinema is not just film without talking. It’s an art of pure motion, of metaphor and of meaning expressed through visual subtlety and magnification of detail. Silent film conveys ideas and emotion which sound would render obvious or clumsy and thanks to these films being ahead of their time, the storytelling remains valid, moving and inspiring in the 21st Century environment.

There will be four films shown in Newcastle this weekend. The first of which is Charlie Chaplin at Mutual, starring the aforementioned Charlie Chaplin. Buster Keaton’s The General is the second film apart of the lineup. Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis star in Harold Lloyd Comic Genius. And finally, Max Schreck’s Nosferatu rounds out the silent film soiree.

The event takes place both Saturday and Sunday, with two films shown each day.
