5 places you can become a ninja without leaving Newcastle

Ever watched a Youtube video of some insanely fit dude defying the laws of physics by punching through a concrete cinderblock and thought ‘I wish I could do that!’ Or watched a Jackie Chan movie wondering how he manages to make self-defence look so amazingly awesome? Ever wanted to be Chuck Norris!? It just so happens that Newcastle is bursting with teachers and sensei’s just waiting to help turn you into the next Jet Lee. From Karate to Ninjutsu, the Urban Insider presents our top 5 ‘Ninja making schools’.

Ninjutsu – The Australian Ninjutsu Academy

The study of Ninjutsu is the study of self-preservation and endurance over all obstacles. It’s also wicked cool. The A.N.A is an extremely intense place to learn, the instructors are very knowledgeable and don’t hold back just because your ‘new’. This style of self-defence is all about disabling your attacker as quickly and easily as you can, using your opponents strengths against them while implying stealth.

When: Wednesday 7:30 – 9pm

Karate – Hunter Valley Martial Arts

Hunter Valley Martial Arts is a black belt school which is run by Brian Hayes who has been awarded the title of ‘Renshi’ after achieving his 6th Dan (level 6 black belt) in 2001. HVMA is one of the very few full time martial arts facilities in the country and encourages black belt graduates to get involved with the centre and continue their training to reach higher levels of black belts, and with a free first lesson you’ll wax on, wax off-ing in no time.

Taekwondo – Rhee Taekwondo

Rhee Taekwondo is one of the oldest styles of martial arts and offers a more traditional form of training. This style of taekwondo is traditional and non-competitive meaning you will be immersed in the culture of the Korean art without feeling pressured to compete. The first lesson is free so why not give it a go!

Jiu-Jitsu – Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu is mostly focussed on ground work and grappling and helps the student become more comfortable defending themselves on the ground. Gracie Jiu-jitsu will help any prospective student become knowledgeable in holds and locks and is a key tool within any up and coming MMA students arsenal.
