The Best Lookouts for a Makeout in Newcastle

Lookouts for a Makeout in Newcastle

Valentine’s Day, sometimes referred to as Singles Awareness Day, can be nerve racking! So we, the ever-considerate team at Urban Insider, have taken it upon ourselves to remove one impending stress. Finding an appropriate place to lock lips can make or break the day, below is a list of The Best Lookouts for a Make Out to explore in Newcastle.

1

Nobby's Head

This headland and breakwater combo’ is so beautiful. While it’s not elevated, as most lookouts are, it has to be included on this map because it certainly looks out. The view from the end of Nobbys break wall spans from Stockton beach, the Hunter River, Nobbys Lighthouse and out to a seemingly endless sea. It is a long walk to the end of the break wall, which gives you plenty of time to take in the semi-romantic scrawlings graffitied on the rocks along the way. It’s perfect for a sunset date, set up your D-SLR on a tripod with self-timer for tumblr-worthy silhouetted smooching snaps.

Murray Avenue

Murray Avenue, in Newcastle East, leads to a grassy knoll beholding quaint park benches and sights of the Newcastle Baths, Beach and the illustrious Cowrie Hole. It’s very cute and what not; being in a park but also sea-side it ticks a few typical romantic location boxes, however it is also situated between residential properties and is in prime view from surrounding roads and apartment blocks, so this make-out lookout should maybe be restricted to serious hand-holding or shoulder brushes for those who aren’t comfortable with overt PDA’s.

Newcastle Cathedral Tower

Christchurch Cathedral dominates the Newcastle skyline and from its top naturally boasts the most spectacular views. The tower costs a couple of dollars to climb, but who can put a price on the perfect first kiss? Lure your lover to the top of the tower and plant one on them in a location they least expect… kissing in a church, how taboo!

The Obelisk

The Obelisk overlooks King Edward Park and the ocean in front of Newcastle Beach. It’s kind of scary here in the night, but perhaps this could be the perfect way to impress upon your date how chivalrous you are, a proverbial knight in shining skinny jeans, perhaps? Otherwise, pay homage to the Obelisk’s symbolic origin as a petrified sun ray and picnic during the day with your date.

Strzelecki Lookout

Strzelecki lookout is a somewhat infamous make out lookout, in fact, chances are that you were conceived there. By day, the 360 degree views play host to hang gliders and tourists taking in the sights of the city with Mt Sugarloaf as its backdrop, Merewether Beach and also industrial areas across the Hunter River. By night, Strzelecki is a playground for P-platers, awkwardly steaming up the windows of their parents cars. The popularity of Strzelecki adds thrill to the venture, just be respectful of other thrill seekers and keep your lights down low.

Bar Beach Car Park

Bar Beach Car Park is the perfect look out for a make out for a Newcastle novice. It’s massive and therefore un-miss-able. The view is best by day, so you can take in the majesty of the local hang gliders or even have a little giggle if they happen to catch themselves on the cliff. This is also a popular spot to skateboard. Skateboarding is an advisable date activity as it provides the means to aid or impress your aficionado, potentially leading to further make outs.

The Cliff

Don’t take your date here if they’re into surfers and you are not a surfer. Or unless you are really good looking, this trumps being a surfer, every time. NB: Body boarding doesn’t count as surfing.

Hickson Street

This lookout is in Merewether Heights and is the milieu for some of Newcastle’s most desirable mansions, primarily due to the panoramic views which also make it a great lookout for a make out. If you can manage to control your abode-envy, continue to the very end of Hickson Street until you come to a white paling fence, this is where the lookout separates the mice from the wo/men. Help your sweetheart clamber through the fence and those willing to risk anything for love should continue down the small pebbly slope, towards the cliff edge. Here little lovers can demonstrate their chivalrous demeanor, helping each other until you reach the smooth rock platform. From here views span to Dixon and Bar beaches in to the north and Burwood and Dudley to the south. All that is left to do now is spread a picnic blanket and implement the good old stretch-and-yawn to cozy up to your cutie.

Redhead Rocks

For many Novocastrians living in “Town”, anywhere past The Junction is too far away, but with a new flash-bang shopping center, we could speculate that they’ve ventured to Charlestown. From here it is but a stone’s throw away to Redhead. It is an imaginatively named suburban paradise, which culminates in a magnificent red headland and cliff. The cliff boasts spectacular views, overlooking surfers and the iconic shark tower on the beach. It would be most romantic at sunset, but is also a little dangerous, so don’t take your sweetheart here if the relationship is...erm...on the rocks.

Green Point

You will find the Greenpoint lookout lake-side, between the quiet but cute suburbs of Valentine and Belmont. The easiest access point is from Greenpoint Drive; however a more scenic route is to park in the car park off The Shores Way and meander along the footpath by the lake. This pretty little location is scenic for those not looking to be seen/scene.
