Tuesday 4th February

Justin Ngariki & The Uptown Girls @ Lizotte’s

As a birthday present to myself, I’ve decided to fulfill a long held ambition. Now, for some of you who’ve seen me perform; prepare to make a sharp left. A full night of BILLY JOEL songs! For a guy known more typically as a purveyor of the more well unrefined styles of music, this might seem an unlikely turn of events and yet, it’s happening. So just go along with it Actually, before we continue, you should probably know: I won’t be doing “Uptown Girl”.

That would be too odd. Alright let’s talk about the band, the fabulous and world famous ‘Uptown Girls’: Peter Gray (bass), Jason Bone (saxophone & b/vocals), Dave Carter (b/vocals & percussion), Pete Lydiard (drums), Matt Gaudry (piano/keys) and Robbie Long (Guitars). All first pick players.

I feel very fortunate to have them on my side. I’ve chosen some of my favourites from his best period and, among them, “Allentown”, “Big Shot”, “Movin’ Out”, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and, naturally, “Piano Man”. So join me on my birthday and hear some of the best songs around played by some of the best cats in town. ONE NIGHT ONLY! Happy Birthday to me!”

With his own band or as a member of various outfits, Ngariki has supported, among many others, INXS, Ian Moss, Richard Clapton and Dragon and shared festival bills with Cold Chisel, Alan Jackson, The Choirboys, Kasey Chambers and James Reyne to name a few.

He currently splits his time between Justin Ngariki & the Dastardly Bastards, The Mark Wells Band, The Schoetz, Bob Corbett & the Roo Grass Band and studio production and session work.
