Global Battle of the Bands - Newcastle Heat @ The Great Northern Hotel

Are you an up and coming local band looking for a head start in the music industry? Want a chance to play on the world stage? Then get yourself to The Great Northern Hotel on Saturday 24th August to compete in the Newcastle Heat of the Global Battle of the Bands!

Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) is a massive international event with over 30 countries involved. First prize is worth over US$100,000 and gaining the winners the title of “Best New Band in the World”!

Finalists will not only have the chance to experience an overseas adventure but there are also lots of other amazing prizes to be won in GBOB including FujiFilm cameras and Converse Chuck Taylor shows…which were all won by Australasian Finalists 2013!

Newcastle band ‘Crawford Brothers’ have just come first in the Australasian Final 2013 and have won an all-expenses-paid trip overseas to compete in the World Final. Newcastle is proving to be a talented town with third place going to ‘New Black Shades’. With two bands in the top three, Newcastle’s local original bands should be inspired and start queuing up to enter in this upcoming Heat!

Hungry Kids of Hungary @ The Small Ballroom

It has been a whirlwind 6 months for the lads from Hungry Kids of Hungary since the release of their critically-raved about album You’re a Shadow. The band from Brisbane are finishing this year with a bang, performing a final run of shows and releasing a brand new video for their latest single Do Or Die.

Catch them on their Do Or Die Tour this Saturday 24th August at Newcastle’s Small Ballroom!

It has been an impressive year for Hungry Kids of Hungary who have spent the majority of 2013 touring all over the world. Highlights include their high-energy performances on the national Groovin’ The Moo Tour, appearances at Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival and their first UK Tour.

You’re A Shadow has received outstanding reviews from Rolling Stone, The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald as well as triple j’s coveted Feature Album and a rousing rendition of Tame Impala’s Feels Like We Only Go Backwards for the station’s Like A Version segment.

Following the release of their greatly anticipated debut LP Sleep In The Water on August 2nd, Snakadaktal have announced an extensive national tour throughout August and September.

The breakthrough artist’s new album - Sleep In The Water - is an amazing array of endlessly shifting sound, a daring new offering that highlights the intense levels of talent hinted at in previous releases like ‘Air’, ‘Chimera’ and ‘Dance Bear’.

The first official single from the album “Hung On Tight” is a masterful wordplay full of dreamy instrumentals and pitch perfect harmonies.

The Phantom of the Opera - Samaritans Charity Open Night @ The Civic Theatre

Metropolitan Players are excited to be presenting the NSW Non-Professional Premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. The show is winner of seven 1988 Broadway Tony awards and is on it’s way to Newcastle! A stunning production with a fantastic cast, The Phantom of the Opera is to be directed by Julie Black who is in her 30th year of directing for the company. With fabulously intricate costumes, sets and a 27-piece orchestra, the production is an amazing experience not to be missed.

The production will run until September 7 with the Charity Open Night occurring this Wednesday in support of the Samaritans organisation.
