Here is your jam-packed What’s On guide for Newcastle this week! The Newcastle Show is back for another year, the Olive Tree Market returns for another Saturday, Alex Bowen performs his new tunes at Lizotte’s + stacks more on offer.

Friday 1st March

Newcastle Regional Show @ Newcastle Regional Showground, Entertainment Centre & Exhibition Centre

The Newcastle Regional Show is back for another year from today until Sunday March 3. Celebrating our cultural diversity with music, traditional dance, food and crafts, along with the regular rides, shows, competitions, and the unforgettable showbags, there is so much family fun to be had! Open Friday and Saturday 9am-9pm and Sunday 9am-5pm, tickets costs $12 (children under 5 free). There is an Early Bird special for Friday only with Entry only $10 between 9am-3pm. With free parking and shuttle bus from Hunter Stadium, it is so easy to join in on all the fun over the weekend. Cat Power @ Newcastle Panthers

Feel Presents are bringing Cat Power back to Australia! Touring at the invitation of Meredith’s Golden Plains Festival and the Perth International Arts Festival, this is Cat Power’s most extensive antipodean tour to date and follows 2010’s sold out national tour. This seasoned artist (real name Chan Marshall), just keeps getting better, and is a show not to be missed. ALL AGES. Doors open 8pm. Tickets $55 + bf. Book tickets through Moshtix.

Long Island Sound @ Cambridge Hotel

They are back from a brief hiatus and ready to give the crowd all they’ve got, so don’t miss out on this performance by Long Island Sound. They are supported by Post Paint, Twin Lakes and I Am The Agent for a big night of rockin’ tunes. 18+ only.  Doors open 8pm. $8 on the door.

Saturday 2nd March

Newcastle Regional Show @ Newcastle Regional Showground, Entertainment Centre & Exhibition Centre

It’s on for another day with cheap entry for the whole family with quality rides, entertainment and showbags of course! Open today 9am-9pm with fireworks closing the night, entry is permitted before 8.30pm.

The Olive Tree Market @ The Junction Public School

This handmade artisan market is not one to miss! Explore the stalls, meet the artisans and collect some handmade goodies. The stalls cover a range of different arts and crafts, including printmaking, jewellery, design, fashion, handmade toys, photography, ceramics plus more! Food and coffee can also be enjoyed while listening to local musicians Samba Frog and Fode Mane. Danny Bhoy @ Civic Theatre

Up for some big laughs? See Danny Bhoy like you have never seen him as he explores all the letters you never got around to writing with his ‘Dear Epson’ show. With some witty word play that will have you laughing out loud and nodding in agreement, don’t miss this unforgettable show. Show starts at 8pm. Tickets cost $48.50. Book through Ticketek.

Bondi Cigars @ Lizotte’s Restaurant

The Bondi Cigars first started gigging around Sydney in 1989 with a blues/R&B sound, and unlike others that they played alongside during this time, they have battled on and become a leading force in Australian R&B. Their instantly recognisable sound has won over fans and critics alike, nominated in the 2003 ARIA awards for Best Blues & Roots album for Down In The Valley along with other impressive nominations and awards.

Parks Week @ Glenrock State Conservation Area

Celebrate Parks Week with free family 2 Wheeled Treks in partnership with the Glenrock Trail Alliance Volunteers, Discovery walks and Aboriginal Cultural Activities for the whole family. Join the NPWS Discovery Rangers for an action packed day of activities with easy to medium 2 Wheeled Treks leaving every half hour, walking tours every hour and cultural activities running throughout the day. Nobbys Lighthouse Open

It is Sunday again which means you have another chance to experience excellent views of the city from Nobbys Headland. Don’t miss your chance to see this Newcastle treasure up close. Closing to the public at the end of March, there isn’t too many Sundays left to take in Newcastle from a different vantage point. Open 10am to 4pm, a kiosk will serve tea, coffee, cake and other light refreshments, or why not have a picnic with your loved ones? FREE Entry.

His sister Joan and brother-in-law Harry are baffled to find Beane happy and in love with the burglar! As Joan remains concerned, who really needs to be taught a lesson? Alex Bowen @ Lizotte’s Restaurant

Fronting his own sound of soul and blues, Alex Bowen is releasing his EP that features tunes likened to Dan Sultan and Jonny Lang. Singing his first ever show nine years ago at 15 with Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, Alex has successfully released his debut self-produced single ‘Wait For Me’. It’s time now for his EP to make the rounds, which was backed and funded by his followers and fans which has allowed Alex to release the EP in a number of different countries with an international tour coinciding its release.
