Newcastle Jets vs. Perth Glory @ Hunter Stadium

International Women’s Day ‘Face of Birth’ Screening @ Tower Cinemas

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Tower Cinemas in town are screening wildly popular documentary ‘Face of Birth’. Exploring the politics of childbirth and its recognition as a human rights issue around the globe, this film by local director and cinematographer Gavin Banks is something that everyone can enjoy. A Q&A after the screening with Banks and obstetrician Dr. Andrew Bisits makes this red carpet event an informative night out. Red carpet starts at 6.30pm. Saturday 9th March

Animal Farm by George Orwell @ Civic Theatre

Animal Farm is known as one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries, and shake & stir theatre co have adapted this gem in a new production combining physical theatre and storytelling. This fairy tale demonstrates how greed and power corrupts, changing the course of history. Set at Manor Farm, the pigs have assumed control and the principles of ‘Animalism’ shine through to be free from human service. It does not take long before the rules that promised freedom become chains that bind these animals once again. Awarded Best Independent Play and Best Direction at the 2012 Matilda Awards, this show promises to be entertaining and funny as hell. Performances are on today 2pm and 8pm, and Monday 11am. Repeater + AnnaLeisa + Model Youth @ Cambridge Hotel

Where else can you see this many acts for $8? Local heavy rock duo Repeater will have you reminiscing about the gigs that were constantly played at the Cambridge, with a little bit of AnnaLeisa and Model Youth thrown into the mix. 18+ event. Doors open 8pm. Pay on the door.

Man In The Mirror - Reflections of Michael Jackson @ Lizotte’s Restaurant

Michael Jackson lives on through this excellent production starring Paul Rizzo, Australia’s internationally recognised, award-winning Michael Jackson tribute/dance artist. The Familiars + My Fiction + The Carousel @ Great Northern Hotel

Get your dose of Indie Rock with these Australian bands! The Familiars have supported acts such as Sticky Fingers, Kingswood and Rogerthat, known for their high-energy live shows. Indie/Synth/Dance Rock outfit My Fiction are celebrating the release of a new record and live show, with their lyrical masterpieces will have you dancing and connecting. Novocastrian band The Carousel will keep the crowd pleased with their Melodic Pop Rock sound, drawing everyone in with their 110% effort and no regrets. Doors open 8pm. FREE entry.

Sunday 10th March

Smash Mouth + Rubix Cuba @ Cambridge Hotel

Australian audiences have always loved this band, their hits like “All Star” and “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” becoming staples for 90’s parties. With multiple singles cracking the Aria Top 20 and “Walking on the Sun” taking out the #1 spot on the Alternative charts, you know this concert will be a riot. Nobbys Lighthouse Open

Again it is Sunday and again you have another chance to experience excellent views of the city from Nobbys Headland. Don’t miss your chance to see this Newcastle treasure up close. There are only  handful of Sundays left before the grounds close again. Open 10am to 4pm, a kiosk will serve tea, coffee, cake and other light refreshments, or why not have a picnic with your loved ones? FREE Entry.

Nikon-Walkley Press Photographic Exhibition @ Lovett Gallery

Why not visit the famed Laman Street to check out Australia’s most prestigious competition for press photographers. Covering a wide range of topics including daily life, photographic essays, portraiture and sport, photojournalism has had one busy year. Showcasing over 100 works picked from over 1000 entries, these shortlisted photojournalists will wow you at every frame. This FREE exhibition will run until 20th April on the 2nd floor of the Newcastle Region Library (Lovett Gallery). Gallery hours are Monday - Wednesday 9.30am - 8pm, Thursday - Friday 9.30am - 5pm, and Saturday 9.30am - 2pm.

“Play for a Pint, Sing for your Supper” Open Mic Night @ Great Northern Hotel

Are you, or do you know someone who is trying to get noticed? All emerging artists take note, because you get to play a half hour set AND get rewarded with a free meal and drink. If you are not musically inclined, come along and support talented up-and-coming local musicians. Guns N’ Roses + Special Guests @ Newcastle Entertainment Centre

Check out legends of music Guns N’ Roses, ZZ Top and Rose Tattoo perform at Newcastle Entertainment Centre. Guns N’ Roses last tour in Australia was in 2010, but did not incorporate a Newcastle date. This year wild frontman Axl Rose along with his fellow bandmates will wow Newcastle crowds like only one of the biggest musical acts in history can.

Thursday 14th March

Cookin Up Comedy featuring Dave Williams @ Lizotte’s Restaurant

Dave Williams is hot property when it comes to the Australian comedy scene, featuring regularly in comedy clubs across the country. Performing every year at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival since 1999, and invited to perform at the Montreal ‘Just for Laughs’ Comedy Festival, you know this guy will have you in stitches. Hosted by one of the Footy Show’s favourite comics, Ray Badran, and featuring performances from up and coming Sydney and Newcastle comics including Zoe Pelbert, Dane Hiser, Rob Bukey and more, this is the best way to spend two hours on a Thursday night!
