YES! Three day weekend! Here at Urban Insider we have so much planned for you over the weekend you’ll need the extra day to recuperate.

As usual there are plenty of live acts to check out including Aussie hip hop stars Yung Warriors and Abby Dobson as well as some live sport with the Knights v Raiders game. As per usual we’ve also thrown in something a little different with the Melbourne Comedy Roadshow and an allergy free cooking class.

Thursday 7th June

Abby Dobson @ Lizzote’s

Ex Leonardo’s Bride font-woman has been described by The Independent, England as “A mega watt powerful voice which conjures melancholy, romance and sex, seemingly out of the ether”, Abby Dobson is returning to Lizzote’s tonight upon the release of her most recent album, Live at the Spiegeltent.

Abbey will also be performing tracks from her highly acclaimed solo album, Rise Up, from which the song, ‘Horses’,  was voted 2nd  in an international songwriting competition by industry heavyweights Robert Smith of The Cure, Tom Waits, Robbie Williams and Timbaland.

Jazz Factory @ The Great Northern Hotel

It’s back! Musicians and music lovers are all invited to the Jazz Factory tonight.

Join Adam Ferrier, Paul Latham, Adam Morris and Steve Woodster with your instrument and play with your chance to win a prize and your spot in the final showdown.

All ages and styles are welcome, winners are judged by the rowdiest applause- so bring your mates and shout them first round.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow @ the Civic Theatre

If you didn’t make it to the Melbourne Comedy Festival this year then get to the Civic Theatre this Friday, Saturday or Sunday for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow.

With a selection of Australian and international comedians the Roadshow lineup includes MC Lawrence Mooney, Tommy Dean, Josh Earl, DeAnne Smith, and ‘Randy’, considered to be the choice picks from one of the world’s largest comedy festivals.

Warning: Performances may contain coarse language, sexual references and material that can offend. It is recommended for people aged 15 years or older.

One Mike (single launch) @ The Cambridge Hotel

Check out local hip hop artist One Mike at the Cambridge this Thursday night for the launch of his debut single the Awakened One.

Having supported the likes of The Herd, Def Wish Cast, Thundamentals and Dialectix, One Mike has worked tirelessly since going solo at the start of 2010.

Following on from the great response his self produced mix tape, Visionary, in 2011 One Mike has developed his sound further without the luxury of produced beats and a recording studio, with future plans to release a debut album and short documentary on his unique hip hop lifestyle.

Newcastle Knights v Canberra Raiders @ Hunter Stadium

Take your family and mates to support the Knights this Saturday in what is one of the most important matches of the season.

Despite losing 5 of their past 6 matches and dropping to 13th place on the ladder the Knights only focus this week is picking up two valuable competition points to keep any hope of their finals aspirations alive.

With the Raiders level with the Knights on 10 points they too will be eager to come back after a 40-0 thrashing by the West Tigers in round 13.

Given that both sides are in desperate need for a win, this clash promises to be an exciting one.

Yung Warrior @ The Cambridge Hotel

Coinciding with the release of their new album, Standing Strong, Australia’s Indigenous hip hop duo the Yung Warriors will be playing at the Cambridge this Saturday as part of their national tour.

Having supported international hip hop heavyweights D12, Akon, 50 Cent and Outlawz the Yung Warriors are rising quickly with their single, Standing Strong, featuring within the Triple J rotation.

Allergy Free Cooking @ Essential Ingredient

Nutritionist, Karen Green, will show you how to prepare allergy free meals at Essential Ingredient this Sunday.

For those of you who have food allergies or friends and family who do Karen Green will demonstrate how easy it is to prepare meals such as highland oat cakes, freedom cookies, gluten and dairy free pastry, goodie balls and more.

Karen will also discuss the issues facing those who live with food allergies and how best to deal with the challenges of eating out, family gatherings and school lunches.

Dean Krywood @ Bar Petite

Within the first 9 years of his working life former model turned guitarist and singer/songwriter Dean Krywood travelled the globe, sharing the catwalk with the likes of Sarah O’Hare, while perfecting his craft as a musician.

Having supported artists such as Abby Dobson, Delta Goodrem, Eric Clapton and Darryl Braithewaite Dean’s musical influences include Marvin Gaye and George Benson.

Since parting ways with Newcastle group Little Hornet Dean has released an EP Aqua Profonda, and won the ‘best male vocal’ category at the ABC music awards in 2006.

Wollombi Markets @ Wollombi

Held every long weekend the Wollombi Markets attract  around 1000 visitors to the beautiful Wollombi area.

With over a hundred stalls the Wollombi markets offer local produce and crafts, plants, clothes, tools, bric-a-brac as well as boutique wineries and natural beauty within the surrounding area.

Run by volunteers the Wollombi Markets benefit a small cross section of their community including the Wollombi Bush Fire Brigade and Wollombi Public School P&C.

Elliot the Bull @ The Cambridge Hotel

The tireless Elliot the Bull are on tour once again in the lead up to the release of their 2nd EP.

Hailing from the Central Coast Elliot the Bull’s eclectic sound features elements of folk, rockabilly, punk, and indie pop that can be sampled at Triple J Unearthed.

This will be the bands third national tour after supporting two US acts Lydia and As Tall As Lions before entering the studio once more with producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels) to record their second EP.
