What’s on in Newcastle this week? Take a guided Winter Wander tour through The Mall, or check out Flight of the Conchords as they bring their tour to the Entertainment Centre!

There’s plenty more to do over the weekend with confectionary goodness at the Hunter Chocolate Festival, unique jewelry and art at the Olive Tree Markets as well as an awesome Fat as Butter Launch party at King St where you can pick up a ticket minus the pesky booking fee!

Thursday 5th July

Winter Wander @ Hunter St Mall

As part of the Newcastle Renewal initiative the Winter Wander tour is on tonight and promises to provide an exciting perspective on Hunter St CBD and The Mall.

Gathering from 5pm at Make Space (Shop 3, Silk House, 200 Hunter St Mall) for light refreshments including delicious Swedish style mulled wine and sticky date pudding the guided tour will set off at 5.30pm to visit many other renew projects in the area including an Exhibition at The Woods and retro music, cocktails and canapés at Odditorium.

Even the most respectable Novacastrian’s will learn something new throughout the tour with plenty of other goings-on in The Mall including later opening hours at Studio Melt, The Chop Shop Clinic and Shannon Hartigan Images.

Fortunately it’s not just The Mall that’s having all the fun. In celebration of the Winter Wander The Terrace Bar is teaming up with their fellow traders to host a free after party complete with great bands  and drink specials until 12am!

It’s about time something fun was done to liven the place up! Grab a few mates and show your support by rediscovering Newcastle CBD!

Rose Carleo @ Lizzote’s

Lizzote’s has a reputation for delivering an intimate evening of musical talent and spectacular food. This week check out multi-award winning singer/songwriter Rose Carleo as she shares with you her latest album, ‘Life Gets in the Way’.

Throughout the acoustic performance Carleo will share with you the stories behind the songs, reflecting upon her life so far.

The Beatnix @ Lizzote’s

IT was 1980, 10 months prior to the death of John Lennon, that Australia’s first Beatle’s tribute band The Beatnix was conceived.

Originally put together for a four week season The Beatnix proved to be so popular that they travelled worldwide performing with fully authentic musical instruments identical to those used by The Beatles.

Saturday 7th July

Olive Tree Markets @ Junction Public School

Originating from the desire to bring together Newcastle’s art, craft and design practitioners the Olive Tree Markets are a vibrant and diverse event where artists can interact with the public and showcase their creations.

Since its inception there are now over 100 unique stalls each month offering visitors an eclectic mix of stalls including; photography, textile arts, illustration, fashion, home wares, jewellery, printmaking, zines, recycled vintage goods, ceramics as well as delicious food from around the world and live music throughout the day.

From 9am- 3pm the Olive Tree Markets are held on the grounds of Junction Public School during the first Saturday of every month, rain hail or shine.

Chocolate Festival @ Hunter Valley Gardens

The delicious annual Chocolate Festival will be held at the Hunter Valley Gardens this weekend!

Featured amongst the luxurious choc goodness will be world class chocolatiers and their decadent chocolate creations including, Adriano Zumbo of Masterchef fame.

For foodies there are plenty of opportunities to pick up a few culinary skills from the scheduled demonstrations on the live stage, hosted by Better Homes and Gardens Chef, Ed Halmagyi.

You can get up close and personal with the chefs in the patisserie kitchen where you can learn how to make breads and pastries like the professionals.

For those of us who are more interested in sampling the chocolate there is the Chocolate Pavilion, a blissful hangout to indulge your chocolate habit featuring stalls of boutique chocolatiers as well as pastries, bread, desserts and truffles.

As expected in the Hunter Valley there is also the opportunity to unwind with some of the country’s best wine and beer in the Wine and Beer Hub.

Clubs in the Community Charity Raceday @ Newcastle Jockey Club

Newcastle Panther’s are the platinum race sponsors of this years ‘Clubs in the Community’ charity raceday in support of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.

Van She @ the Cambridge Hotel

Upon the release of their brand new album, ‘Idea of Happiness’, Van She will be playing at the Cambridge this Sunday as part of their Australian tour.

Duck, it’s a dish I’m often tempted by in restaurants because I’m unsure of how to cook it at home.

Since duck is now widely available in our local supermarkets, it is the perfect time to master this very tasty meat.

At Essential Ingredient Chef Chris Thornton (Restaurant Mason)  will demonstrate his culinary passion with you as he demonstrates how to roast a duck breast, confit a leg, make duck pate, and assemble canapés with duck filling.

Flight of the Conchords @ Newcastle Entertainment Centre

Yes! Flight of the Concords is in town for their one and only show in Newcastle!

New Zealand’s much loved folk comedy duo are in Australia as part of their first ever run of Australian headline shows.

From a successful career spanning almost 15 years Flight of the Conchords has gained international notoriety for their hilarious brand of musical comedy.

This show promises laughs, sing a longs, and witty stage banter as the boys showcase popular pieces such as, ‘Sugarlumps’ and the ‘Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros’ rap battle.

Tap Dogs @ Civic Theatre

Dein Perry’s hugely successful Tap Dogs is back in Australia after enjoying 16 years of international touring.

Wednesday 11th July

The Other Film Society @ The Royal Exchange

For a different movie night of a different kind check out The Other Film Societies season of independent, art house, foreign and classic films each Wednesday night.

Held at the Royal Exchange from 7.30pm it’s a great way to inject a bit of culture into your life.

As a not- for- profit  association all the proceeds go back to the films and venue hire. While a full seasons membership is $160 you can have a guest membership for the night at jsut $10pp.
