Weight can become an issue for us around this time of year, we’re in the midst of winter and our bodies have gone into hibernation mode. If you’re an early riser then boot camp may be more of your thing. Boot camp Australia run a workout class almost every day at 5:30am, 6am and 6:30am, it’s a very energetic way to start the day and will have you feeling more awake than any coffee could. Depending on how hard you push yourself during the classes, you easily burn upwards of 450 calories a session.

If it’s just fitness through running your looking to motivate yourself for then the Newcastle Veterans Athletic Club could have what you need. The club holds multiple races per month and what better motivation is there than training for a race? The races are split up into age groups and there are different distance events ranging from 600m to over 5km, so you’re sure to find a race that suits you. A 10min jog at a pace of around 10km/hr burns off over 100 calories! So it’s a great way to improve your fitness.

If you fancy yourself a little more of a water baby, then you may enjoy joining a swimming club. The Lambton swimming club opens for training in early October so there’s plenty of time to splash around and get used to the water before you start your training. Jumping into the water during the summer season is also one of the perks of joining the swimming team. A 30min recreational swim can burn off between 100 to 200 calories and a vigorous 30min swim – such as a race – can burn off over 500 calories! So it’s well worth a try.
