In a Newcastle band or know a good one that needs to get their act together? Band competitions can be a great incentive to do that recording, take that press shot and schedule that jam. Here’s something to ease you into it - Play for a Pint, Sing for your Supper at The Great Northern Hotel. Held every Tuesday, you’ll get a meal & drink in exchange for a half an hour set, and you also go in the running for $500 cash, an interview and ad in Reverb Street Press and a gig supporting a Spy Vinyl Presents national touring band. Lure your friends to come support you with $10 steaks and $8 jugs of beer. From 7pm. For more info, contact the venue.

Loving the pub gig vibe? Check out the Jager Uprising Band Comp held at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney and supported by Jagermeister. This comp is held every Wednesday (doors open 7:30pm, $8 entry) and showcases four bands on the main stage. After 4 heats (16 bands), the top 4 bands compete in a final for a major prize of $1000 and a photography package worth $500. Not bad. Check it out.

Want to open this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival? Triple J is offering a band the opportunity to do just that & all you have to do is be registered and have tracks up and available on Unearthed. If you take out the prize, you’ll join a line up including Kanye, Regina Spektor & The Vines! The prize includes flights to festival site Woodfordia, onsite VIP camping and excellent band cred. Entries close on 20 June. Check out Triple J for more info.

Got uni students amongst your ranks? Why not enter the National Campus Band Competition? Win it and you’ll join the likes of past winners The Vasco Era, 78 Saab, Jebediah & Eskimo Joe, and then of course there’s the cash prizes and gloating rights. Entries are open now and after you’re registered you’ll compete in a local heat. Down the track there’s State Finals and then a National Final in October. Bands are judged on originality of material, musicianship, stage presentation, recording viability & audience response. Think your band has what it takes? Even if you only answered maybe, check out the site for more info and get amongst it!

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
