Newcastle welcomes a new creative space & gallery this week, as TIME&PLACE officially launches TONIGHT!

TIME&PLACE is a Renew Newcastle initiative offering a creative space and gallery for photographers, designers, illustrators and filmmakers.

The launch, which kicks off at 5:30pm, includes a special exhibition showcasing the works of Viktoria Baskin Coffey. Viktoria has been a volunteer for the past four months in India, and is preparing to go back to volunteer for both The Belaku Trust and AusAID. The Belaku Trust is an initiative to serve women and children living in poor and marginalised households in Kanakapura Taluk in Karnatka, South India.

The exhibition is being held to help Viktoria raise funds to complete her project in India, and will showcase photographs from her time spent with the women and children of The Belaku Trust. The exhibition will also include a preview screening of “Belaku: To Give Passage to Light”, and Viktoria will be speaking about her time in India.

Urban Insider talked to Brett Piva, Creative Director and Graphic Designer for Pocket Design, about the upcoming launch of TIME&PLACE…

TIME&PLACE is part of the Renew Newcastle initiative. What does a program like Renew mean for emerging business people & creatives?

Renew Newcastle is everything. Without their assistance our space wouldn’t be happening. They have created such an incredible existence for creative artists in Newcastle and have given them all the chance to showcase their work to the community.

What’s been the most fun part of setting up TIME&PLACE?

The most enjoyable part of this adventure is all of the people who have given us support and believed in us. Everyone that has offered furniture, supplies and a helping hand has just made this experience so much more rewarding. Also, the people you work with. It’s great to work in an environment filled with like-minded professionals that bring fresh and unique ideas to the table. Coinciding with all of this is definitely the opening night on Friday.

What’s been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was relocating at the last minute. We were in planning at a Hunter St Mall property, when we were recently given notice to vacate. We had to pool our efforts together and continue what we started and set out finding a new space. So, with just 3 days set up time to launch our planned exhibition, we are opening this coming Friday. We couldn’t have done this without the co-operation of our team, assistance from Viktoria who is exhibiting and Marni’s efforts from Renew Newcastle. We’ll always appreciate their efforts.

Your opening exhibition is works by Viktoria Baskin Coffey. How did you discover Viktoria? What can people expect to see in her photographs?

Viktoria is a great friend of ours who we’ve supported since her beginnings volunteering in the villages surrounding Bangalore, India. When asked to host the fundraiser we were more than happy to assist in showcasing the time and place of the women in India and the struggles they uphold in their communities. The photographs capture Viktoria’s time spent with the women and children of The Belaku Trust and give us an insight to their struggles and the means to sustain their living.

So you’ve got the exhibition & Viktoria speaking at the launch… what else will be happening on opening night?

Along with Viktoria’s talk the exhibition will include a preview screening of Belaku // To Give Passage To Light. There will also be a selection of handcrafted items made by the women and children of The Belaku Trust to sustain their living. There will be an After Party held at the CBD Hotel offering discounted prices for people from the event supplied with a wrist band.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

TIME&PLACE will be showcasing ongoing exhibitions. We’ll be aiming to showcase emerging creatives once a month.  Along with the gallery we will be looking to hold film nights, showcasing creative documentaries and films. We have great plans for utilising this amazing space and they will all soon be set in stone. We look forward to sharing this experience with the creative community.

We are also looking for like minded creatives to share our space with us. There are a couple of spots we would like to fill. We are looking for photographers, designers, illustrators, filmmakers or anyone that has a unique creative talent that we could collaborate with. If you are an experienced creative professional looking for a space to share ideas and work independently then please send your work and experience to us.

Exhibition prints can be purchased on the night. All money raised will go towards the Belaku project.

TIME&SPACE is located at 477 Hunter St, Newcastle. For more information.
