This Week in Newcastle: live music, art and a movie or two?
A collection of tidbits and info to get you out of the house and into the thick of it in Newcastle!
Friday, 11 March: A great mesh of Aussie talent is set to grace to stage of the Bar on the Hill tonight. The semester is officially off to a bang and what better way to celebrate than Disc-O-Ball. Special guests, Muscles, Bag Raiders and Stonefield will be performing so get set for a night of great music and dancing with your new uni besties. Tickets are cheap, grab a friend and come along for a drink to toast the commencement of semester.
Friday, 11 March: Friday also sees to the launch of an exciting art exhibition by Hunter based artist, Jane Lander. The exhibition is titled ‘This is the big picture’ and will be showcased until 17 April 2011.
Friday, 11 March: Newcastle band, Seabellies, will be at the Cambridge tonight performing their indie electronic tunes including Transcending. Seabellies are local favourites and were discovered on Triple J’s Next Crop Artist in 2007.
Friday, 11 March - Sunday, 13 March: Here’s your chance to check out Nobby’s headland - that’s right, it’s open for public access for the first time in more than a century, and there’s a great photography exhibition as well. More info.
Saturday, 12 March: Thirsty Merc are playing a free gig at the Brewery. The gig starts at 4pm, the guys will be on stage by 5.30pm. If you are looking for a free night in town, this couldn’t be more perfect.
Saturday, 12 March: Looking for something different to do on your Saturday night? Why not head to the Heddon Greta Drive-in for a cinematic experience right in your very car. The first flick, Tron: Legacy starts at 7.45pm and is followed by I Am Number Four. For only $25 per car, per film, grab your pillows and some friends and settle in for a good night. Don’t forget the popcorn!
Thursday, 17 March: Thursday night is gig night. Folk singer, Donavan Frankenreiter, will be performing at the Cambridge Hotel. The Cambridge is putting aside their usual indie, heavy music and welcoming a more mellow feel for the night.
Thursday, 17 March: The John Steele Singers with Jonathon Boulet will be heading up the stage at the Bar on the Hill. If you like “to throw bricks from the overpass” you will like the John Steele Singers live. More info & tickets.
Saturday, 19 March: After wrapping up a residency at the Sydney Oxford Arts Factory in February, Royal Chant are bringing their brand of raw, unadulterated indie rock to Newcastle’s CBD Hotel. They’re touring ahead of their debut release, Raise Your Glass & Collapse & you can check out the first track from the album on their Myspace. Free entry.
Saturday, 19 March: Nat Col and the Kings will be taking the stage at the Cambridge Hotel.
Saturday, 19 March: There’ll be a clash of the divas when both Annie O’Dee & the Hot Shots and The McNasty’s take to the stage at The Lass to battle blues vs country. From 8pm.
Sunday, 20 March: ARThive Gallery is hosting Artist Market: Young and Baroque. ARThive Gallery is an artist run space for emerging talents to share, create and showcase. The event is free, so if you are into fashion, design, prints and paintings, where else should you be on a Sunday? More info and times.
Sunday, 20 March: Punk accordionist Jason Webley (USA) with be joined by Men Who Drip With Germs & Juke Baritone at the Great Northern Hotel from 7:30pm. Entry is just $10 and you know you want to find out how ‘punk’ and ‘accordion’ go together. It must be good because Webley’s shared the stage with The Dresden Dolls, The Avett Brothers, Devotchka, Architecture in Helsinki, Regina Spektor and many others and performed opposite Amanda Palmer as part of duo Evelyn Evelyn.
