More often than not there’s plenty going on in the Newcastle music scene, and this week we find ourselves in the midst of a bunch of opportunities for local acts.

Band Comp Final at The Great Northern

Tonight The Great Northern Hotel will play host to the final of the Event Horizon Band Comp, presenting by Nine Ninety Nine Promotions & Tommirock Studios. 5 bands will go head to head to compete for prizes including professional photography, music video production and studio time to the tune of $1,899. The bands performing will be Anything For Now, Narcissus, PawnMagz!, Swallow Your Pride, Los Cardenales & Global Battle of the Bands finalists The Tillegra Damned.

While you can’t enter now, it’s $10 entry, and a great opportunity to go along and support these local bands - they’ll be marked on originality, musicianship & presence, as well as individual votes from punters adding points to their final scores. Playing times & more info.

Bacardi Band Comp Calling For Entries

If you missed the boat on the Event Horizon Comp, or just want to double your chances at glory, why not enter the Bacardi Band Comp? Previous winners include The Bastilles & I Am The Agent. Entries are now open and forms are available from The Cambridge website. There’s more than $6000 worth of prizes up for grabs… and did I mention the glory?

Local fest New Beginnings Calling for Applications

Another opportunity to do some stage time! Applications to perform at the 2012 New Beginnings Festival are now open. They’ve already announced Eurodancers of the 90s The Vengaboys as headliners (yes, the Venga bus is coming, yes, everyone is jumping…), and a little birdie tells me that tickets are selling fast. Check it out.

Have you got music news? Make sure you send it on through!

This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
