Friday 9th

Laneway Project @ Darby St

The laneway between Goldbergs and The Depot has been transformed into a vibrant, sexy and appealing space for locals and visitors to Darby Street, with new lighting, seating and wall art. This installation will be officially launched this Friday, 9th August, 2013, at 5.30 p.m

The Darby Street Traders and Newcastle NOW have partnered with the Office of Student Architects to come up with a community owned new look for the laneway.

Kevin Coffey, Chairperson of the Darby Street Advisory Group said, “the laneway project is the first of many placemaking initiatives. The laneway is now an area where people can linger a while in safety and soak up the atmosphere. We hope that the community becomes proud of these installations and owns them. We are about to create little wins that make the place more of a village.”

Michael Neilson, Manager, Newcastle NOW believes that the Darby Street Lane will inspire others to transform more areas. “The city is moving forward and this proves that anyone can make a real difference in their community. Placemaking transformed New York City and it’s transforming Newcastle too.”

Simon Meli & The Widowbirds @ The Cambridge

Simon Meli and his band The Widowbirds will take their rootsy rock show around Australia in July. Having earned his musical stripes over many years both here and overseas, Simon Meli will bring his mesmerizing rock’n’roll swagger to venues around the country.

The national tour will give Simon’s fans a chance to catch his live shows with his band who have been touring for the past few years. Reviews off the back of the shows in Europe were nothing short of incredible, with some saying they were simply stunned when frontman Meli appeared on stage.

“..it was his voice that left me open-mouthed and slightly stunned. There was a time when all rock’n’roll bands had to have a frontman who sang this well – but that era is long gone: I had not heard a sound like this for years. The Orange Press.

Often drawing comparisons to some of the world’s finest music artists, such as a very young Rod Stewart, a Paul Rodgers and a young Robert Plant, it is Meli’s unique and original sound, his powerful delivery, backed by The Widowbirds that is what Australian audiences are waiting for!
