A Day At The Newcastle Races: A Sure-Fire Winner

A Day at the Newcastle Races: A sure-fire winner

If the wintery weather is getting you down and you’re looking to get out and do something a little bit different, a day at the Newcastle Jockey Club may just be the perfect tonic.

You don’t have to wait until Boxing Day to get your horse racing fix with meetings conducted at the Broadmeadow Racecourse every second Saturday. A day at the races is the perfect excuse to get a group of friends together and spend some time in the sun trying your darndest to pick a winner or two. The Newcastle Jockey Club caters for all, from the diehard racing enthusiast through to those whose knowledge goes as far as participating in a sweep come the first Tuesday of November each year.

If you’re looking to go with a group, your best bet would be to purchase a General Admission ticket. Take a picnic rug, a few snacks and spend your Saturday afternoon out on the grass adjacent to the track itself. There will be none of the notoriously bad (and long) Boxing Day queues either, with getting a bet on, purchasing drinks or food to finding a vacant toilet all able to be done with relative ease.

A GA ticket gives you entrance to the course itself, a chance to get down to the stables and check out the horses before they head out to race and entry into the public grandstand and bar facilities which offer a great view of the track below. If that isn’t your thing and you’re looking for something that little bit more memorable, book a table at Chevals Restaurant. The restaurant is situated in the members grandstand with views of the finishing line, a seat in the restaurant gives you a three course meal and your own private table. Although this option might set you back a little bit more than a day in the public area, it is a great opportunity to dust off your best suit or dress and perhaps impress someone special.

With its central location, a Saturday spent at Broadmeadow offers the perfect stepping stone for either a meal along Beaumont or Darby Street or a night on the town, with the Club providing a free courtesy bus upon the meetings completion to take those who are looking to kick on.

Yes, a day at the races might not be everyone’s cup of tea but why not give it a go. I’m sure that after you cheer home your first winner for the day and your wallet is filled with a little extra cash, you will be thoroughly enjoying yourself.
