Friday 29 July

After moving to new premises, The Roost Creative will re-open its doors on Hunter St tonight with the opening of Type Face, an exhibition about typography. Submissions were called from designers, artists, doodlers & scribblers to give their interpretation of a letter of the English alphabet. 6:30 - 9pm, 593 Hunter St, Newcastle.

Sad that you’re not at Splendour? Don’t forget that PNAU are performing at Newcastle Panthers tonight. Tickets are $35.

For those who like it loud, remember that you’ve got choices tonight - check out East Maitland’s Loud at the Library, or head along the Club Led at Newcastle District Tennis Club. More details.

Saturday 30 July

Have you ever been to an ice hockey game? Here’s your chance! Support your local team the Northstars by going to Hunter Ice-skating Stadium this Saturday at 5pm. More info.

Waverly Estate is releasing a limited edition Cuvee this weekend and inviting people come along and try it. Waverly specialises in aged wines and has married aged wines together and fermented them a second time to create to Cuvee. Sunday 31 July

The last Raid My Wardrobe of 2011 is happening this Sunday! Head along to the Newcastle Basketball Stadium between 10am-1pm. Entry is just $3 and you’ll have the chance to find amazing pre-loved designer pieces! Check out our interview with RMW founder Rachel Prest for her tips on scoring the best items!  Remember this Sunday is the LAST event for this year (the next one is scheduled for March 2012) so don’t miss out!

Something for the familyPeek into the Past at Tocal Homestead today. Head out to Paterson for a day of blacksmiths, horse & buggies, and see how it used to be done. You can also indulge in scones from the wood stove or damper from the camp oven. Take the family - entry for adults is $10, and school children get in free!

Monday 1 August

Check out some garbage-turned-art at the Hunter Wetlands Centre. Since its inception in 2000, the annual Waste As Art Competition and Exhibition has helped to promote the Hunter Waste Education Group’s waste-to-resource message by encouraging the use of waste products and materials in the creation of art. Each year the competition is open to all residents of the Newcastle region, and offers generous prizes to the most creative pieces. To see some of the most innovative pieces from the last 10 years visit the Hunter Waste Education Group.

Tuesday 2 August

Rainbow’s End tells a story of the lives of three Koori women living in the 1950’s. The play explores the power of learning and the fierce optimism of women in a comical and, at times, tender manner, with a few musical numbers thrown in too! Rainbow’s End stars Christine Anu, Lillian Crombie, Chenoa Deemal and Garth Holcombe and is on at the Civic Theatre tonight! More info.

Wednesday 3 August

The Cat Empire’s Felix Riebel will be performing his Into The Rain national tour at Lizottes Newcastle tonight. Show-only tickets are $30 and a dinner & show package is available for $72. More info & tickets.

Thursday 4 August

Put your music knowledge to the test at Lizottes Rock Trivia tonight! Local band Jaywalker will also perform. Tickets are $13 each and dinner is available. More info & tickets.

Friday 5 August

Saturday 6 August

Bruce Mathiske’s Rhythm Express will to the stage at The Civic Theatre tonight. The virtuosic guitarist will be joined by his new 5 piece band to perform a selection of world music arrangements of songs from popular artists including Sting, Muse, Paul Simon and Deep Purple. More info & tickets.

Ok chocolate fans, we’ve got you sorted this weekend - you’ll be heading to the Hunter Valley Gardens Chocolate Festival! Held over 2 days, the festival will celebrate all things sweet with plenty of chocolate, breads, pastries, desserts, cakes, truffles and more to go around. Hunter Valley Gardens will host a celebrity cafe, live patisserie kitchen, chocolate pavillion, cupcake kitchen, kids’ space, wine & beer hub, Callebaut showpiece and Gateaux competitions and live musical entertainment.
