Newcastle Music Review: Jumping on the Venga Bus!

The Venga Boys Newcastle Concert

Last week I finally turned the big 2-1; the approach of this milestone sparked a touch of nostalgia, and my best friend and I decided to revisit our childhood by jumping on the Venga Bus to see the Venga Boys in concert at Newcastle Panthers.

The Vengaboys were originally meant to play at the New Beginnings festival at Morisset Showground, however the festival was cancelled leading to the show at Panthers instead on Saturday, 14 January. The entire night was like being transported back to a massive 90’s dance party! First were the DJs, who got the crowd going by playing all of the classic 90’s hits, featuring the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and even some Elton John/Lion King favourites! (Can you feel the love tonight?) Supporting the Venga Boys were local Newcastle band The Herbs, an Indie synth-rock tribute band to the Spice Girls. Putting their own spin on the classics that we all know and love, The Herbs were decked out in their sequined best and fit right into the 90’s vibe on the night.

When the Venga Boys finally came on, the crowd, primarily full of nostalgic 20-somethings like myself, went crazy! Despite having aged 10 years since their last visit to Australia, the Venga Boys were in fine form and their costumes and choreographed dance routines for every song did not disappoint! The boys were in their cowboy and sailor outfits, and the girls were in their tightest and brightest. Were they lip syncing? Questionable; however, it didn’t really matter in the slightest. They also played a short set, but let’s face it; the majority of the crowd were only really there to see We’re going to Ibiza, Boom Boom Boom Boom, and We Like to Party!

Devastated that you missed out on the Venga Boys? Don’t worry, more 90’s goodness is coming our way; Aqua are touring in March!

If anyone’s got any photos from the night, share them with us on Facebook, Twitter (#urbaninsiderpic) or Google+!
