This Week in Newcastle: A Whole Lotta Soul, Gigs Galore & French Films

Things to do in Newcastle

Looking for things to do in Newcastle this weekend? Here are some of Newcastle’s upcoming events & gigs!

This Friday, 20 May, there’s one for the hip hop fans! LOTEK & Last Kinection will be ripping it up at the CBD Hotel & entry is FREE! More info.

With more soul than they can control, The Lamplighters will be bringing their explosive set to The Lass this Friday, 20 May. Along with Supernaturalman, they’re supporting Indian Gun! This could very much be one of those nights at The Lass!!

For the francophiles amongst us, you’d better get along to the annual French Film Festival held this year between 20 - 22 May. The festival is held at Greater Union cinemas and includes 5 French films over 2 days, and of course wine & cheese. More info.

If you just can’t get enough soul, look no further than the Delta Riggs this Saturday, 21 May, at the CBD Hotel. A tasty combination of rootsy soul, R’n’B, sweet sweet gospel harmonies and genuine blues swagger - sure to please, and entry is FREE!

Equally as satisfying will be the Wyndham Estate‘s tasting session this weekend! This indulgent, Wine and Chocolate tasting is open to the public and for a tiny price of $5 per person for tasting.  You will experience the finest of wines and the latest chocolate release from Nestle.  Bookings are essential!

Gypsy & The Cat are also adding to what’s on Saturday 21st May - all the more for music lovers. With 3 songs from their debut album in the latest Hottest 100, these guys are, as they say, “so hot right now”. Check them out at The Cambridge. For more info & tickets.

Here’s a final reminder for fashion lovers to get along to Raid My Wardrobe this Sunday, 22 May! It starts at 10am and is $3 entry. More info.

Set aside this Wednesday 25 May for  Canadian hard rockers Propaghandi, who will be taking to the stage at the Bar on the Hill tonight. A message from the band should give you an idea of what’s what: “Propagandhi will not abandon Australia. Propagandhi will not allow Australia to become a haven for terrorists.  Propagandhi will remain engaged in Australia until everyone is either dead, maimed or incarcerated. Only then can democracy and freedom prevail. Now let us blaze!”. Tickets are available from U-Shops on campus, The Rock Shop, Catfight Collections, Big Tix & Oz Tix.

Australian success story Amy Meredith will take it up a level at Level One, Newcastle Leagues Club on Thursday, 26 May as part of their Higher Education tour. They’re coming to Newcastle amidst 17 dates across Australia! Tickets are $20 pre-sale or $25 on the door. You can buy them from the venue, Big Tix, Oz Tix & Moshtix.

Be part of a global wine tasting experience on #Chardonnay Day on 26 May!

The folky Boy & Bear are sure to delight on Tuesday, 31 May, especially with their #5 Triple J Hottest 100 cover of Crowded House’s “Fall At Your Feet”. Tickets are on sale now for a small price of $23!

Have you got an event coming up in Newcastle? Let us know!

Helen Henry grew up in Newcastle, and in 2010 graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the local University. This was pleasing because it made her officially qualified to communicate about the things she likes most: music and the music industry, photography, digital, cute animals and her friends & family. Most recently, Helen worked as a Digital Projects Assistant at Sticky Advertising and was Editor of Urban Insider. She has recently landed a pretty sweet gig working in the music industry in Sydney.
